One of the fascinating things that happened on Easter was the Emmaus meal. The story was told in our Gospel lesson for today. It was Easter evening, two disciples are walking home after the stressful weekend in Jerusalem. They were heart-broken and confused. They were followers of Jesus; they had heard and believed His teaching. But in a flurry of activity, Jesus was arrested in the middle of the night by the Jews and then given a quick trial by the Romans. By 9am in the morning, he was condemned and crucified to a cross. It was an unbelievable tragedy; these two disciples on the road to Emmaus are full of sorrow; they can’t believe what happened! Jesus is dead … their heads are spinning; they are so disappointed, they just can’t make sense of it all.
Unbeknownst to them, Jesus has risen from the dead! On their way home that night, the Risen Lord Jesus appears to them as a mysterious traveler, and He walks home with them. Jesus slowly reveals Himself to them as the crucified and risen Savior; He reveals Himself through His Word and in His Meal.
Like the Emmaus disciples, Jesus reveals Himself to us through His Word and in His Meal. Worship is the key location where that happens!
Jesus is traveling with you on your journey to Heaven. He is with you exactly like He was with those Emmaus disciples — through His Word and in His Meal. Amen!
